Mechanic as a career

Is it worth it be a mechanic?

No it’s not. Everyone shits on you, you gotta buy $30k+ in tools, and the amount of knowledge you need to have doesn’t line up with the pay. I’m 30 and work as a mechanic. Some guys hit 100k/yr, but they are the ones that usually do gravy work all day (like brakes, suspension etc). The guys who actually know how to diagnose and find the problem don’t get paid as much which is bullshit. You also can’t afford the cars you want and don’t work on the cars you want to work on. Instead your replacing Karen’s suspension because she understeered and hit a curb. And then says “ever since you changed my suspension my check engine light has been on.” And let’s say you do end up doing a good job, like another shop tells the customer they need an engine and you find out the crank sensor was just misadjusted. He comes back with NHL hockey tickets for saving them so much $$$. Think you get those tickets? Nope it’s the service advisor who talked to the customer, they just pocket it and say nothing.

Get a better job that pays and you can buy the cars you want
